Creed Sermon Series
One of the most amazing things about the Christian faith is the consistency of doctrine that has been held for thousands of years. Followers of Jesus have been able to articulate the tenets of their faith by reciting what has become the Apostles’ Creed since the 2nd century. We’re joining the wisdom of the ages as we dive into the foundations of our faith expressed through the beauty of these words. Join us each week of the Creed Series as we go deeper into all that this statement teaches us from the Scriptures.
The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic* Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
*The word “catholic” means “relating to the church universal” and was the word used in the original version of the Creed. It does not mean the Roman Catholic Church, but the church, the body of Christ, as a universal fellowship. The phrase, “He descended into hell,” was not part of the creed in its earliest form.
